Brief Market Update

• Stock markets fell in September as rising interest rates continued to pressure the markets. Year to date, they are still up double digits.

• The yield on the 10-year US Treasury rose 54 basis points to 5.29% in September, its largest monthly increase in four years. This marks its highest level since 2007.

• The yield on Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS) is still hovering around 3% (varying based on maturity). Not bad for a promise from the US government on top of inflation! (But know that TIPS prices will still move with interest rates)

What I’m reading/watching/doing

• We went to Montreal for the weekend to watch cycling’s world championships. Here were the highlights / my observations:

  • Slipstream Jr. mostly napped during the races but he did get to see the riders pass by once. His favorite team to cheer for was the race motorcycles (aka momocycles)

  • Montreal was very French! Having gone to Ontario for many years I have seen a lot of French on food packaging and road signs but never heard so much French. I have not retained much from high school sadly

  • I am sure you were watching the broadcast and spotted me at 166 km to go, but here I am in case you missed it

• If you follow my alias on Goodreads, you will know I am obsessed with the moon landings and Hampton Sides. But this month it was all about finance for me, I guess I had it on the brain with launching Slipstream. I read Risk and Reward by Ben Carlson, Stocks for the Long Run by Jeremy Siegel, and Your Perfect Portfolio by Cullen Roche. If you enjoy reading these books, you might not need a financial advisor :)

• Slow Horses are back on Apple TV with season 6. And I have just finished season 1 of The Americans on the stationary bike. Spies everywhere!
